Video by Matjaz Krivic @krivicmatjaz | In the Algerian desert I encountered an otherworldly scene reminiscent of Mars. Millennia of erosion, weathering, and tectonic forces have crafted a landscape of remarkable rocks, which, according to UNESCO, contains “one of the most important groupings of prehistoric cave art in the world.” The rock art of Tassili n’Ajjer, spanning 10,000 years, depicts the lives and cultures of ancient peoples and their harmonious relationship with the ever changing desert environment.

The art serves as a reminder of our shared history and the impact of human actions on the world. It showcases the resilience of past societies, thriving amid the challenges of this arid land.

As the sun was setting over Tassili n’Ajjer’s surreal landscape, I felt a deep connection to the past. And as the desert journey continued, I realized that our planet’s history is etched in every crevice, awaiting discovery and appreciation by those who seek it.
