Strung along the Maine coast like a strand of pearls, the islands of Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge Complex span over 200 miles of coastline and protect precious habitat for nesting seabirds, wading birds and bald eagles.

Dressed to impress with bright white masks, the Atlantic puffin, also known as the common puffin, is the only puffin native to the Atlantic Ocean and reaches its southern breeding ground in Maine. They nest in burrows on rocky islands with short or no vegetation during the summer and spend the rest of the year bobbing on the ocean and diving after small fish.
