The moon’s south pole region is a shadowed mystery—swipe to see the remarkable image offering a stunning new glimpse.

NASA's new ShadowCam—200 times more sensitive to light than previous lunar cameras and mounted on the Korean spacecraft Danuri—is allowing scientists to peer into the depths of the moon’s permanently shadowed regions. Its images are helping NASA plan future surface exploration targets, and the brightness of the material in these pockets of darkness can be used to estimate how much ice they contain. Project manager Matt Clark takes a selfie reflected in ShadowCam’s radiator in the clean room of Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego, California, where the camera was built. The radiator is covered with very thin mirrors and helps keeps the camera cool even when the instrument is illuminated by the sun.
