In March 2018, Sudan, the last known male northern white rhino on the planet had to be euthanized because of complications related to old age. It made the northern white rhino functionally extinct as just two females, Najin and Fatu, are left. Since 2019, an international team of scientists from the BioRescue project have created 29 viable embryos, employing advanced assisted reproductive health technologies using oocytes from Fatu and frozen sperm from deceased male rhinos. Now the global consortium of scientists is enlisting help from Colossal Biosciences, known for attempting to resurrect extinct species such as the woolly mammoth, the dodo, and the Tasmanian tiger.
