Found on Key Largo, the Matecumbe Bay raccoon, like other raccoon species, is capable of getting into just about anything. These masked bandits have some of the most nimble hands seen in nature. In fact, this species was actually named for its skillful paws, with the word raccoon coming from the Powhatan word “aroughcun” - when translated, this means “animal that scratches with its hands”. While most animals rely on sight, scent, or sound to hunt, these mammals depend on their sense of touch to locate food. To heighten this sense, racoons will do something called dousing, in which they wet their paws in order to stimulate nerve endings. Photo taken at Ark Angels Wildlife Rescue.
