Drought and intense summer heat have caused the Mississippi River's water levels to drop to near-record lows in many areas, exposing the river bottom and disrupting the transport of goods.

Louisiana and Mississippi experienced their hottest Augusts on record, according to @NOAA, and many parts of the South continued to experience extreme drought in late September. Lack of freshwater flowing into the Gulf of Mexico has allowed salty ocean water to flow up the river in some areas of Louisiana, contaminating drinking water.

This NASA / @usgslandsat image from September 16 shows the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee, where water levels fell so low that the sandy river bottom could be seen from space.

Image Description: An image from space of the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee. The river looks like a wide gray-green ribbon curling diagonally through the center of the image from bottom left to upper right. Light sandy areas can be seen throughout the river, as low water levels allow the river bottom to show through. Gridded farmland in shades of brown and green surrounds the river on either side, with the right half of the image mostly covered by the darker green suburbs of Memphis. The city appears in the upper right, with gray and white urban areas and roads.
