Especially the ones that are on repeat, that you’re unknowingly clinging to in spite of the fact that they’re not working for you. For me, this was the misaimed question: Why? When my mother was diagnosed with a rare neurological disease and doctors gave her “statistically speaking, ten years left to live, tops,” I couldn’t stop asking “Why?”. Why her? Why us? Why this? Why now? Why is this happening to me and my family? I was in my late teens and early twenties at the time. It took me three whole years to realize that this type of thinking was not serving me at all, it was making me sick. Eventually, I chose to let this mental narrative go—for the sake of my own health. It’s a wonder how I had never asked: Why not her? Would it be okay if it were someone else’s mom? Why not us? Would it be more acceptable if it happened to some other family? Why not this? When have humans ever chosen disease? Why not now?
