O, Salomé, Salomé, dance for me!’ 🎭 This striking illustration was created to accompany Oscar Wilde’s tragic play, ‘Salome’. In the play, Salome is asked to dance for King Herod in exchange for anything she wants. Salome dances the ‘dance of the seven veils’ and requests the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter. This illustration to the tragedy was made by artist Aubrey Beardsley in 1893, who was known for his striking black ink drawings, inspired by Japanese prints.
