It’s horrible and all-too-relatable for so many of us at one time or another. That’s why I’m excited to highlight @victoriabalic on #thisisthewaywednesday. She was our translator for press and for Q&A panels at @superfestcl in Santiago last weekend, and what really impressed me and relieved me is how fully she gives over to the person she is interpreting. Victoria didn’t just convey the words I was saying- she did her best to share my energy, my emotion, my mannerisms and the soul behind everything I wanted to transmit. She listened so carefully and patiently and was incredibly thoughtful while translating- I started out feeling nervous and anxious because of my poor grasp of Spanish, but within a few minutes of seeing her breathe and move with me, I felt like I could be myself. To be willing to let go of your ego and give so selflessly to enable connection between people who don’t speak the same language is a beautiful thing, and I’m so grateful to her for walking the way.
