I photographed these Danube crested newts while visiting @alpenzoo_innsbruck in Austria. Found in central and eastern Europe along the basin of the Danube river, adults will spend more than half the year living in lakes and ponds where reproduction will take place. When the timing is right, males will perform a mesmerizing courtship display to attract females, who will lay up to 200 eggs. Post-mating, adults will spend the remainder of the year living in nearby forests while larvae remain in the water until they reach metamorphosis.
