I can write, pour, spill, splat, draw, paint, spew and dream. There are no rules, no measures, no interjections. It doesn’t have to line up to a nonstop scroll of thought regarding what authentic creative expression is or isn’t. It is mine and I can express as I wish. I think such a space is sustenance and salve. This year has entailed a substantial shift creatively for me. I was taken aback at the challenge I felt in moving out of old frameworks. I wasn’t expecting it to feel so wonky. I have learned to enjoy the wonk, however, and have embraced it as I go. My movement has been slow as I learn to explore again and the slowness is okay. I’ve been intentionally moving away from collaborative projects shared here, though for now I still enjoy supporting a small few who I consider friends and whose work I admire. There is much to say about seasons past, mostly in gratitude and also with some grit, but perhaps for another time after I make some room to gather those thoughts cohesively. In short, it has felt like a simultaneous coming home and venturing out. It feels wondrous to make more room to let new expressions grow. I may stray far from stationery and journal pages in time, perhaps altogether who knows, but I think they will somehow be threaded alongside. In any case, it’s okay to reroute, to change paths, to try your hand at something new, just like that, in a snap. You don’t need permission to detour and go.
