Anne Frank was a Jewish girl who hid in a secret annex to escape Nazi persecution and was later killed in a concentration camp. My father was a young man in the Empire of Japan, an ally of Nazi Germany, conscripted to work in an airplane factory in Toyama. On the day of my father's 80th birthday, at our family home, I found the diary he had written during and after the war, from the ages of 16 to 17. As a child, deeply inspired by Anne's diary and dreaming of becoming a writer, I now still swaying between the two diaries and the two histories. アンネ・フランクと私の父は1929年の同じ年に生まれました。アンネ・フランクはナチ・ドイツの迫害により《隠れ家》に身を潜め、その後、強制収容所で殺されることになった、ユダヤ人の少女です。私の父は、富山の飛行機工場に学徒動員された、ナチと同盟国だった大日本帝国の少年でした。私は私の父が80歳の誕生日を迎えた日、実家で、私の父が記した戦中と戦後、16歳から17歳の日記を見つけました。子どもの頃、「アンネの日記」に深い感銘を受けて作家を夢見た私は二冊の日記と二つの歴史の間で未だ揺れています。 As you can no doubt imagine, we often say in despair, “What’s the point of the war? Why is England manufacturing bigger and better airplanes and bombs and at the same time churning out new houses for reconstruction? Why are millions spent on the war each day, while not a penny is available for medical science, artists or the poor? Why do people have to starve when mountains of food are rotting away in other parts of the world? Oh, why are people so crazy?
