The signature at the bottom right of this painting is fake, likely added by a seller hoping to trick buyers hungry for a rare landscape by Mary Cassatt. The true artist’s identity remained a mystery until 2006, when museum curators learned of a watercolor by Victor Gilbert with an almost identical composition.
