(photo by @chamiltonjames ) A wild otter inspects me in the sea off the coast of Shetland whilst on assignment photographing the species for February issue of National Geographic Magazine. Shetland is a stronghold for eurasian river otters and a great place to see them during the day - in much of the UK they are nocturnal. To get this shot I snorkeled out to an offshore kelp bed that the otter was fishing and slowly made an approach. This particular otter was shy but curious to know what I was and swam around me at a distance for nearly two minutes before vanishing into the murk. I started photographing otters underwater in Shetland over twenty years ago - it takes many months to get results as they are secretive and shy animals.
