The day has come! Four brave same-sex couples from my home state of Montana have decided to sue the state for the freedom to marry. I will forever be grateful to have grown up in such a beautiful and scenic place, but unfortunately Montana has never been particularly progressive when it comes to LGBT rights. This is a huge step and I hope that the state legislature will stand on the right side of history and continue the momentum that has been building towards true equality for the entire nation.

“It isn’t the government’s place to stand in the way of someone’s happiness,” ACLU of Montana Legal Director Jim Taylor said. “It’s the government’s place to provide equal protection under the law. Excluding same-sex couples from marriage is a clear violation of our nation’s guarantee of equal protection. Every couple should have the freedom to marry and to have the legal protections to care for one another that marriage provides.”

I want to thank John Michael Myers, a resident from my hometown Kalispell, Montana. He is currently running for a GOP position in the Montana House of Representatives and has stated that if elected in District 5, he will submit a bill to provide civil unions for LGBT residents in Montana. Although I'm a firm believer in marriage equality, I acknowledge that civil unions would be a huge step in the right direction.
