This is a baby sea urchin -- a larva, to be exact. When sea urchins reproduce, they spray eggs and sperm into the open sea in a fertilization free for all. As soon as an egg is fertilized, it becomes an embryo the size of a speck of dust. By the end of the day, the newborn sea urchin develops a gut and a skeleton, and it starts to look like the creature pictured above. After a few months of floating around, the urchin sinks to the bottom of the sea and transforms into an adult in as little as one hour.
