Casablanca, Morocco: Seven years, 12,000 pairs of hands; and the Hassan II mosque was built. Also known as the Grande Mosquée Hassan II,
the mosque is the largest mosque in Morocco and Africa, and seventh largest In the world. Designed by French architect Michel Pinseau, the structure was commissioned by King Hassan II. The king wanted Casablanca “to be endowed with a large, fine building of which it can be proud until the end of time.” In 1986 the work began, with master craftsmen working both days and nights. Nearly all of the materials for the structure (with the exception of the white granite columns and glass chandeliers) came from Morocco. From the outside, the Mosque is a sight immediately commanding attention-cream in color, and towering above the city. But, from the inside, it is no different. With stone and marble floors stretching out hundreds of meters, and exquisitely painted and carved cedar ceilings of the most intricate designs, the structure takes your breath away both inside and out. The mosque is open to all Muslims at daily prayer times. Non muslims who wish to see the finely crafted interior may take off their shoes and join guided tours which take place several times a day.
