What made the climbing so hard was that it wasn't just a simple repel back down to base camp. To retreat we had to fully reclimb sections and spend the same amount of energy on the way "down" as we did on the way up. Towards the end of this day we were totally falling apart. We had to cut a stuck rope in half, dropped a repel device, and worst of all the gear sling with our climbing rack slipped out of Mark's hands and fell down the 5,000 ft South face.
