The sunrise at not just any old factory. This is the #K-West #nuclearreactor at the #HanfordNuclearFacility on the banks of the #ColumbiaRiver in Hanford, Washington. K-west and K-east reactors were built in the 1950s but the Hanford facility was part of the #ManhattanProject that produced #plutonium used in the A-bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. @Fritzphotos was there on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック for the story on EPA #Superfund published in the December 2014 edition of the magazine. Now decommissioned, the reactors are a Superfund site with #radioactive waste being removed by the US Dept of Energy. There are 9 reactors at Hanford. In the cleanup and containment process the reactors are stripped down and cocooned in concrete. #ThePhotoSociety #NationalGeographic
