As old as 14,000 years ago seems it is rather late in the development of human symbolic expression. The first evidence of widespread symbolic behavior takes place almost 100,000 years before that on the southern coast of South Africa. By the time humans reached Europe we already had artistic abilities that easily translate to today’s world.
