African Penguins preen at the oceans edge after returning from a long foraging trip out at sea. On Namibia's Mercury Island penguins and a suite of other seabirds deposit copious amounts of guano (seabird poop). Wind and waves wash some of this natural fertilizer onto the rocky shores and into the ocean spurning on the growth of algae and those mollusks that graze on seaweeds. Mercury Island is the centerpiece of #Namibia first marine reserve. Unpublished photo from Dec 2014 @ナショナルジオグラフィック story Cross Currents.
