Where do old tires wind up? Often in massive tire piles like this one in Westley, California. This pile stored 45 million used tires until it was struck by lightning in 1999, and the resulting fire took 30 days to extinguish. Tire scraps are technically not considered hazardous waste, but a standard car wheel can produce 2 gallons of oil when burned. Between the oil they leak and the toxic fumes the blaze emits, tire fires are very dangerous and difficult to control. It cost the Environmental Protection Agency $3.5 million to clean up the waste from the Westley Tire Fire. To learn more about the impact of oil on our environment, head to go.ted.com/tirefire
