The Arkansas House of Representatives passed a religious freedom bill today that mirrors the controversial bill that recently passed in Indiana. Both bills have caused an uproar across the country because they allow private businesses, individuals, and organizations to discriminate against LGBT people (or anyone else they want) on religious grounds.

The Arkansas bill will now go to Governor Asa Hutchinson, who has previously said that he will sign it into law.

Throughout history, even semi-recent history, religion has been used to justify slavery, criminalize interracial marriage, and promote gender inequality. Society has come too far to allow such narrow-minded and prejudiced laws to take effect.

We must speak out against these bills. Even though every person is entitled to his or her own views and beliefs, the government should never allow those beliefs to prevent others from being treated like equal citizens.
