Runners in #TelAviv participate in an after-school program for underprivileged athletes. A number of the team's members are asylum seekers from Africa who entered Israel illegally with their families, crossing the country’s southern border with Egypt. In lieu of formal refugee status, migrants have been granted a temporary protection visa. One goal of the track and field program is to provide hope, support and community for these young runners. @tamirhasacellphone spent time with the team in February for @nytimessports. “They train together and they push each other in a way that makes the team as a unit invaluable,” he said. #nytweekender
