The Weather Underground began in 1969 as a militant and aggressive offshoot of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). The Weather Underground disagreed with the SDS’ practice of peaceful protests. The Weather Underground believed the in methods of the Black Panther Party, the Black Liberation Army and John Brown: violence. Some of the Weather Underground's exploits include, but are not limited to: The Days of Rage, the bombing of United States Capitol and the Pentagon, the jailbreak of Dr. Timothy Leary and the San Francisco Police Department Park Station bombing, which left one cop dead and another wounded. Two of the most prominent members of the Weather Underground are husband and wife, William Charles “Bill” Ayers and Bernadine Rae Dohrn. The Days of Rage were advertised with the slogan, “Bring the war home!” The Days of Rage started with the bombing of a statue in Chicago’s Haymarket Square and escalated into a clash between the Weathermen and the police. The death of Black Panther members Fred Hampton and Mark Clark in December, 1969 during a police raid compelled the Weather Underground to take action. On May 21st, 1970 the Weather Underground issued a "Declaration of War" against the United States government, using for the first time its new name, the "Weather Underground Organization" (WUO), adopting fake identities, and committing to covert activities only. Dohrn famously said, "We felt that the murder of Fred required us to be more grave, more serious, more determined to raise the stakes and not just be the white people who wrung their hands when black people were being murdered.” The Weather Underground’s numbers and power diminished by the end of the 70s. Ayers and Dohrn had gone underground. Some members joined the May 19th Communist Organization which was responsible for the 1981 robbery of a Brinks armored truck containing $1.6 million. The robbery was violent, resulting in the murders of two police officers and a security guard. Ayers, Dohrn and others saw this as the unofficial end of the WUO.
