The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) is a revolutionary leftist militant group based in Chiapas, the southernmost state of Mexico. Zapatista spokesperson and main ideologist, Subcomandante Marcos, has said, "We don’t want to impose our solutions by force, we want to create a democratic space. We don’t see armed struggle in the classic sense of previous guerrilla wars, that is as the only way and the only all-powerful truth around which everything is organized. In a war, the decisive thing is not the military confrontation but the politics at stake in the confrontation. We didn't go to war to kill or be killed. We went to war in order to be heard.” The group’s name comes from Emiliano Zapata, the agrarian reformer and commander of the Liberation Army of the South during the Mexican Revolution, and sees itself as his ideological heir. Though the EZLN reflects libertarian socialism, and mirrors anarchist and libertarian Marxist thought, the EZLN ardently rejects political classification. EZLN defines itself through indigenous Mayan beliefs and Zapatismo thought. The EZLN seeks indigenous control over their local resources. After their 1994 uprising was countered by the Mexican army, the EZLN has ceased all military offensives. Their new strategy attempts to garner Mexican and international support. The EZLN has adapted and currently uses the Internet as a platform to spread their messages. Thanks to their new strategies, the EZLN has received greater support from a variety of NGOs. The EZLN have made great strides in Chiapas for gender equality and public health, but they remain unable to establish political autonomy for the province.
