Photo by @mike_hettwer - SHIPBREAKING - These young Bangladeshi workers are “cuttermen” at the shipbreaking yards located on the black sand beaches of the Bay of Bengal. Over a hundred of the yards dot the coastline just north of Chittagong, Bangladesh – an area of 5 million people. These workers said they were 14 years old. Their job was to use torches to cut apart some of the largest ships in the world, which were typically 25-30 years old. The yard managers like to hire them because they can get inside the smaller cubbyholes and tight corners of the ship. Their typical work week was 6 days of 12 hours each. Very few workers have eye or lung protection and many get Welder’s Keratitis from looking directly at the cutting torches. The shipbreaking video we produced has been seen by over 900,000 people and can be viewed on several sites including the Nat Geo YouTube channel.
It’s called Where Ships Go to Die, Workers Risk Everything and you can cut and paste this link to view- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOmtFN1bfZ8.
