Photo by @mike_hettwer - SHIPBREAKING - A Bangladesh shipbreaker wades through the mud, carrying part of a steel cable that weighs over ten thousand pounds. In these shipbreaking yards, the ship is cut apart from the inside and sections are winched to shore using the cables. Most of the steel will be turned into rebar for building construction. The cable carriers have permanent depressions worn into their shoulders from carrying the cables and are paid about $1-3 per day. It's a very physical and dangerous job - among other things, they wade barefoot through the mud which contains heavy metals, sharp pieces of steel, engine oil and other dangers. The shipbreaking video we produced has been seen by over 900,000 people and can be viewed on several sites including the Nat Geo YouTube channel.
