Darwin was an avid pigeon collector, owning Jacobin, Curler and Puffer pigeons alike. Pigeons like these were an attempt by Darwin to prove the mechanism through which natural selection works. By selecting for certain traits, #pigeoners like Darwin can select for certain features in subsequent clutches, meaning that over the course of pigeon generations one can breed for birds with long foot feathers, or curled feathers, or as in this photograph, inflatable air-bladders. #evolution #natural selection
