The Great Blue Heron rookery on a small island in the James River lies within a few hundred yards of the downtown business district of Richmond, Virginia.
The herons began nesting on this island in 2007 and by 2014 the rookery had grown to over forty nests. They would arrive sometime in February and by
mid-June their young fledglings would leave the nest and begin their solitary life as adults in the distant marshes, creeks and rivers. The Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias) are fish-eating birds and so the timing of the rookery is directly related to the spring spawning run of herrings and shad. Sadly, and
for reasons known only to the herons, they did not return to this 'urban' rookery on the James this year. They did return, however, to fish in the surrounding
rapids called the Falls of the James. This photo of a very talented Great Blue Heron is from a personal work in progress on the Falls of the James. Will the
