You have two types of mechanics when traveling Vietnam. 1) your typical greased-up Joe who runs a legit shop, and 2) a collection of amateur vigilantes that come out of the shadows to self-diagnose the problem. They are some of the nicest people you'll meet while traveling and will probably offer you beer and cigarettes even if it's before 12noon. I've found that every time my bike needs fixing it's done arbitrarily and lasts for about 36 hours before needing another fix-up. Each "mechanic" has their own recipe for what they think works, and almost always there is a different part of your bike that is sacrificed in the process, leading to a never-ending string of riding and repairing that becomes second nature after awhile. These guys were on the side of the road between main cities and I was welcomed with open arms while they each took a crack at fixing what was wrong. One guy put it in neutral and kept revving the engine until fire was coming out of the exhaust. I had to tell him to stop, haha. #vietnam #contrateur
