When you have only three months to launch a global radio station, you go with your gut. Just ask Zane Lowe (@zanelowe), who left the BBC to help start Apple Music’s Beats 1.
“We had very limited time,” says Zane. “How are we going to fill this? What the hell are we going to do?”
With Beats 1, Zane and his team opted for a mix of big and small: programs hosted by the likes of Dr. Dre, Pharrell and Elton John, along with a spotlight on emerging musicians.
“You can sit there and think about it all day, but until you actually start, nothing’s ever going to evolve or get better,” says Zane. “At the end of the day, it’s like, just get it on the air and see what people think. And they’ll tell you.”
