#Asmara, #Eritrea, is one of Africa’s most isolated and picturesque capitals. One of the city’s most famous landmarks is the futurist Fiat Tagliero petrol station built in the 1930s. It is emblematic of the modernist and art-deco buildings of the capital, a legacy of Eritrea's erstwhile colonial masters, the Italians, who left in a hurry in 1941 as the tide turned against Italy in World War II. Asmara, home to about 600,000, has hardly changed since. WSJ’s @matinastevis is one of a handful of reporters to have visited the Eritrea, a secretive dictatorship, since foreign correspondents were deported in 2008.
