China will abandon its one-child policy, 35 years after it was implemented in 1980. All Chinese couples will now be allowed to have two children, Chinese official media said. The move is symbolically significant and amounts to an acknowledgment of the social and demographic problems policy has created. On WSJ.com, we're showing one-child propaganda through the years, including this sign on the outskirts of a village near Dongying, Shandong province, in August 1997. The sign urges people to ‘improve the quality of the population’ and ‘control the population increase.’ See more at the link in our bio. (?: Greg Baker/Associated Press)
