Bearing Witness ~ The Refugee Crisis Summer, 1994 ~ Hundreds of Cuban refugees take a break from the heat while waiting at the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detention center. During the summer of 1994, a period of mass migration known as Cuban Rafter Crisis, countless men, women and children tried to float on makeshift rafts from Cuba, to seek a better life in the United States. More that 35,000 rafter or balseros made the attempt that year. Those lucky enough to make it to Florida where given asylum under the so-called "wet foot/dry foot” policy. Others picked up at sea, where brought to the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, some staying for nearly a year, many later being brought to America, contributing to one of the most vibrant cities in North America -- Miami. This image is part of a multi-week series, #BearingWitnesstheRefugeeCrisis, delving deep into my archive of more than 20 years documenting forced migration based upon war, conflict, poverty and oppression around the world. The events we are witnessing throughout Europe and beyond have haunted humanity for centuries, most often caused by the weakness of humanity. Today we are seeing the largest mass migration since World War II, the desperate act of tens of thousands fleeing war and oppression. Throughout the coming weeks I will be putting a human face on this tragedy, illustrating the reality we bear witness today -- our brothers and sisters in the dire act of survival. NO, these are not terrorist. They are mothers, sons. Men, daughters. You and me, all on a journey for hope. Join me by sharing this story over the coming weeks as we visit eastern Turkey and its border with Syria, Haiti, Cuba, South Sudan, Bangladesh and yes, images soon from Izmir, Turkey, to the beaches of Lesvos, Greece, where I've just returned. A story that is about all of us.
