This is a concrete chunk of street corner from a DIY curb cut. Activists took hammers to the corner because the city had discontinued its curb-reduction program and people trying to get up impassable curbs had been hit by cars. The protest launched the disability rights group ADAPT.

Every time you leave your home to go anywhere, you are using public transportation resources. Walk on a sidewalk? Drive a car on a public road? Take a subway to work? Fly to visit family far away? Transportation infrastructure is an extremely orchestrated and managed network of movement that is critical to every person. Equal access to transportation has been major element of the Civil Rights and Disability Rights movements. —Joan, ACLS Fellow
