This is Alex Wildman (@fortyonethirty). He is a climber from Philly. We first met in 2009 when he was working for @rei and I was in town with @thenorthface. We went to the climbing gym, enjoyed a Philly sandwich and talked about life. He was finishing up his studies to be a nurse. Climbing is his passion. Fast forward six years Alex is a cardiac nurse at the Princeton Hospital, a local organizer for the @americanalpine club and host of the @reelrock film each fall. This January he was planning his first expedition to Patagonia. He and his buddies were building strength by ice climbing and winter camping in the Poconos. He was ready. One evening after a climb he noticed an upset tummy, which he attributed to food. Two nights later he woke up with severe pain. Being a nurse he knew this was more than too much hot sauce. Something was wrong. After a biopsy and a battery of tests he found out that, at age 33, he had lymphoma - a type of cancer that affects the immune system. Alex is an optimist. He trained to the best shape of his life for his dream expedition. Rather than see it as a lost opportunity he figured it was meant to be. Alex was psyched that he was stronger than ever for this new mountain he must climb. Yesterday I was in Philly for the @franklininstitute. Alex was mid way through a 96 hour "alpine push" with chemo at the Rhodes Oncology Center, University of Pennsylvania. Rather than lay in a bed with hospital sheets he brought his sleeping bag and camping kit. A couple of carabiners and some climbing gear softened the reality that we were in the cancer ward. The metaphor of climbing a peak and taking on the challenge of cancer is Alex's source of strength. Alex's mother and brother joined us as we spent two hours laughing, planning, smiling and drawing upon inner strength to beat cancer. Alex's next stop is the annual meeting for the American Alpine Club in DC on the 27th of February. His awesome thick strawberry-blond hair will be absent, yet his radiant smile and exuberance for life will bring us happiness. We got this! #holdfastallstormspass @cac_climbing #aac_phl
