What we don’t see in this photograph is how the dark side of human nature can transform the most beautiful places into a living hell. This is Douaumont on the Verdun battlefield. Hundreds of thousands of people were slaughtered here by high tech modern weapons, the likes of which the world had never seen before. WWI was the first modern mass destruction. The same technologies that made modern life exhilarating, efficient and powerful were used to destroy life on an unimaginable scale... a scale beyond human comprehension. Technology itself is not good or evil. Technology is not human. There is a dark side to modern progress that mirrors and amplifies the dark side of human nature. No matter how technically advanced our world becomes we all still live on a frontier of good vs. evil, of human decency vs. barbarity. The challenge of our time is to learn to live on this frontier and realize that what keeps our world safe comes from human choices compelled by conscience... not machines. A century ago, this place was living hell. It’s peaceful now but the battle still rages.
