Remembering photographer #MalickSidib, who has passed away at the age of 80. Sidibé was born in Soloba, a small town in southwestern Mali. In 1962, he opened Studio Malick in the Bagadadji neighborhood of Bamako; the indoor establishment achieved its heyday during the 1960s and '70s. Although Sidibé favored studio portraiture, which often commemorated special occasions and captured clients looking their best, he is arguably most renowned worldwide for party photographs that showcased his capacity to frame bodies in motion. Sidibé’s images captured the optimism of the independence era and the ecstatic energy of Bamako’s youth expressing their individuality at neighborhood parties and dances.
