My friend / NPR photojournalist David Gilkey, and his colleague Zabihullah Tamanna were killed today while embedded with Afghan Special Forces in Afghanistan's Helmand Province.

I shot this picture of David in Afghanistan in 2010. David was one of the bravest, most certain and most beloved guys I've known. For more than 25 years he traveled to the harshest corners of the world to show us all the real deal. "The things to do were amazing and the places to see were epic." David once said.
