“The Newlywed Game” was on TV as Julia Rhoden sat on her bed last Saturday, exhausted from another long day at the health care center where she works as a nurse’s aide. Then, there was a loud boom and then another and another. Julia, 53, felt a sting as a bullet entered her back. “I been shot! I been shot!” she cried out to her children in the next room, as blood soaked through the summer dress she was wearing as a nightgown. On Memorial Day weekend, 64 people were shot in Chicago, the city of 2.7 million that Julia calls home. Six of those 64 people were killed. Julia had been released from the hospital by Sunday, when @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer @heislerphoto took this portrait at her home. “Emotionally, I’m not good — this put a fear in me,” Julia said as she rested, the bullet still lodged in her back. It’s too close to her spine to be removed, doctors told her. Visit the link in our profile to read more about a weekend filled with violence in #Chicago.
