When chytrid swept through Central and South America, it didn’t cause die-offs of every amphibian species, or even kill every individual in the populations that did collapse. SCBI geneticists are trying to identify the differences in the immune system genes between frogs that die and those that survive, with the idea that conservationists and population managers could translocate individuals with the identified “good genes” or even breed for those genes in populations under human care.
