The Atlantic puffin is one of the UK’s most colourful and charismatic bird species but like a great many of our coastal bird species the puffin is struggling to adapt fast enough in these rapidly changing times. The warming seas are having a negative effect on their target fish species, increased pollution is also having a negative effect and the plague of overfishing is a constant menace. As such, whilst the puffins will often nest and begin the process of chick rearing these attempts often sadly end in failure and fewer and fewer pufflings are reaching adulthood. As such the Atlantic puffin is now listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species for birds. I captured this image on the Shetland Islands whilst working #onassignment for a @ナショナルジオグラフィック story on their coastal neighbours, the Northern gannet. Having clambered to the base of some precipitous cliffs I was able to echo the colourful nature of the puffins’ bill with its surroundings of purple thrift, the yellow lichen-encrusted rocks and the deep blue of the distant ocean.
