Historically created by hand through intensive labor, lace was worn and traded strictly by the affluent, with European histories and connotations of status woven into its patterns. Moved by irony and contrarian taste, Miuccia Prada turned to lace as a personal challenge against her own conventions: “My personal taste tends to be too good,” as said to WSJ Magazine, “so I tend to fight against it by working with things I don’t like, like lace — I did a whole collection based on lace.” Prada’s inventive plays on lace are on view at the @メトロポリタン美術館 through September 5.
