Zahiiya, 10, played with her brothers, Moutayam and Majed, while waiting for the school bus outside their apartment in Toronto. In Lebanon — where the family had fled from their home in Syria — the 3 children used to work for a dollar a day and cry as they watched other kids board school buses. Now, attending school for the first time in their lives, Zahiiya, Moutayam and Majed treat the morning like a race: poised to go, ready with new backpacks and insulated lunchboxes an hour early. Their Canadian sponsors, a group of grandmotherly strangers, found schools for the children, as well as doctors, clothes, summer programs and bikes. They also invested many months, tens of thousands of dollars and their own hearts in the Hajjes’ success. Now they face a gut-wrenching question: What should they do about the relatives halfway around the world? @nicoletung took this photo while on #nytassignment in Toronto.
