“I don’t care about money; all I care about is giving a proper education to my kids.” Ali al-Hajj is of the million-plus refugees in Lebanon. He says that here, just a few miles from Syria, where his family is from, “there is nothing.” Ali is waiting for a chance to join his brother, Mouhamad, in Canada. Months ago, the 2 brothers used to stand at a dusty crossroads together, looking like a matched set as they waited for trucks rumbling by to stop and, maybe, give them work. They were working last winter, tiling a roof, when Mouhamad’s phone rang and a voice from the @unitednations said his family had been chosen to move to #Canada. Mouhamad accepted right away. But when he hung up he was reeling. “Go,” Ali told him. “Just go. Don’t think about it.” Mouhamad promised to try to bring his younger brother to Canada. But months later, Mouhamad had yet to fulfill his promise to make his case.
