Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety | Rabbit portrait – Successful wildlife photography is not always about simply finding a subject but rather about finding a subject in the right location. Despite what I must admit were a couple of pretty half-arsed attempts I’d never really found a really good site for rabbits near my home in Derbyshire. I’d found rabbits but only in small numbers and where and when they’d appear seemed incredibly unpredictable. When I feel like I’ve got a reasonable chance of producing the sort of image that I want to then I’m the most patient and persistent person that I know but equally, when I feel like I’m wasting my time then the opposite applies. As such my early attempts at rabbit photography yielded only a handful of useable images. One day in Norfolk however changed all that as I just happened, by chance, to pull in to a layby. In the field to my left was a massive rabbit warren that seemed like it had a really high concentration of rabbit kittens and all of which seemed to be located around just a small part of the warren system. After this initial piece of invaluable luck the rest of the process could not have been more straightforward as the warren also sat adjacent to a reasonably busy road with a footpath running alongside. As such these rabbits were used to both people and noise and were remarkably confiding. It was then simply a case of getting in to position a few hours before sunset and then waiting for the first few pairs of ears to start appearing. Whilst the site was great for portraits however the flat topography and cluttered backdrop prevented more expansive images but images such as these are always useful for magazine front covers and the like so I was happy to produce what I could.
