The back alleys of most cities are ugly, home to puddles and trash. But in #Montreal, they’re growing into surprisingly lovely neighborhood hubs. The city’s several thousand alleyways started as country routes along old agricultural tracts. By the early 20th century they’d developed into social centers, where children played and merchants delivered ice and coal. More recently, more than 250 Montreal blocks banded together to form official #RuellesVertes, or green alleyways. The alley gardens give residents leafy space for block parties, pop-up restaurants, trick-or-treating and more. For visitors, they offer back-door peeks into daily life. Tour companies like @fitzandfollwell and @spadeandpalacio are including Montreal’s green alleyways in their routes, and an app called Parcours Verts et Actifs points #urbanexplorers down verdant back routes.
