It’s Friday, and @nytfood is here to add some sprinkle to your day. The Funfetti explosion began in 1989, when @pillsbury introduced a white cake mix with multicolored sprinkles included in the box. There was just one twist: The sprinkles were for coloring the batter, not for decorating the top. Since its debut, #Funfetti has run rampant. First, the cheery #rainbowsprinkles invaded cookies and waffles; then they marched on, swarming over cocktails and croissants, and finally, they became a design motif, on phone cases, scented candles and press-on nails. @nytfood’s favorite form of Funfetti, though, might be the classic cake.
