Boys played table tennis in front of empty shops in the market plaza in Miaomiao Lake Village, China. “Business is bad,” one vendor said. “There are no people here.” Miaomiao Lake is no ordinary village in China; it was hastily built by the Chinese government to house some 7,000 Hui Muslims from water-scarce lands in the country’s northwest. Their resettlement was just one small part of the world’s largest environmental migration project. So far China has resettled 1.14 million people from lands distressed by #climatechange, industrialization, poor policies and human activity. But residents of villages like Miaomiao Lake are struggling to adapt. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer @joshhaner captured this scene while on #nytassignment in China.
